Where to buy retro games in New Zealand

New Zealand has no single big retro games chain any more. What it has instead is a handful of independent shops, most of them online, a couple with a counter you can walk up to, each with its own corner of the hobby. This is a guide to eight of the shops whose stock this site shows. A game's page here lists every shop we read, so you can see who has a copy tonight without checking each website.

Every shop below links to two places: its page here, which lists what it has in stock and what it's asking, and its own website, where you actually buy. What each one "tends to carry" is read from the games it had in stock as of 14 October 2026, so expect it to drift.

Shops you can visit

Appleby Games, Christchurch (applebygames.co.nz). A storefront as well as a website. A broad pre-owned range from the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 through to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, and many of its listings say a copy's condition and whether it's complete.

Otaku Mart, Pukekohe (otakumart.co.nz). A trading card and anime shop with a counter in Pukekohe and a smaller shelf of pre-owned games, mostly PlayStation and Xbox, with some handheld titles such as the PlayStation Vita.

Online shops

Level Up Gaming NZ, Auckland, online (levelupgaming.nz). The most listings of any shop we read, with deep PlayStation 2 and PC ranges alongside the Xbox, Wii and later PlayStation generations.

Nostalgia Box (nostalgiabox.co.nz). Its catalogue leans to the PlayStation 2 and to Nintendo, but most of it is sold out at any one time, so its page here is the quickest way to see what is actually in stock.

Respect Retro Gaming (respectretrogaming.co.nz). Pre-owned games from the PlayStation 2 to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era, with some Wii, original Xbox and Sega Master System titles.

Mad Elf Games (madelfgames.co.nz). Mostly pre-owned, with a mix of PC, PlayStation and Xbox games, and it lists each copy's condition.

Retro Realm Games (retrorealmgames.co.nz). Retro cartridges and discs, from the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 to the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance, and it says in the title when a copy is cartridge only or has a damaged label.

Overkill Games (overkill.co.nz). New and imported games rather than pre-owned, mostly for the current consoles, including pre-orders, some of which come with a bonus the shop lists on our game pages.

Finding a particular game

You don't need to go shop by shop. Search for the game here, and its page lists every copy any of these shops has tonight, with the price, the condition and what's included as each shop describes it. A few shelves help when you're browsing rather than hunting:

  • In stock: everything currently available, filterable by platform.
  • Complete in box: copies with the box or case, the manual and the game.
  • Restocked: copies that came into stock over the last week of nights we read.
  • The sixth generation: the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox era, in one place.

If the game isn't anywhere tonight, its page lets you ask for an email when a copy turns up at a New Zealand shop. How stock alerts work has the details.
